Woodville Palace, Shimla |

Location |
|
Situated at an altitude of 7,000 feet, far from the
sweltering plains, Shimla was once a nondescript
village. It was popular with the British in the
1830s and later became the summer capital of the
Imperial Government. Enticed by its salubrious
character, the British ended up spending more time
at this hill station, than at their real capital at
Kolkata. Today, it is the capital of Himachal
Pradesh and holds the lingering echoes of the bygone
era.
Shimla’s moods change with the seasons, each with
its own charm. The monsoon provides an opportunity
to see some of the most magnificent sunsets in the
world.
Woodville Palace has history dating to 1865 when Sir
William Mansfield, Commander-in-Chief of the
Imperial Army, became the first resident of this
charming estate. The building was reconstructed in
1938 by Raja Rana of Jubbal State when hundreds of
expert artisans were brought from as far as China to
ensure the highest quality of craftsmanship. Kanwar
Uday Singh, the grandson of the Raja of Jubbal,
opened the mansion as a heritage hotel in 1977.
Today, the palace is located in four acres of
peaceful surroundings allowing for solitude and yet
only half-a-mile from the bustling Mall.
