Location :
The town of
Palampur came into being when Dr. Jameson,
Superintendent, botanical Gardens, North-West
Frontier Province, introduced the tea bush
from Almora in 1849. The bush thrived and so
did the town which became a focus of the
European tea estate owners. Palampur can
serve as the fulcrum for excursions further
afield. You can visit the Tibetan monastery
at Bir and carry on to Billing, arguably the
finest site for hang and para-gliding in the
country.
Near Kangra on the banks of the Beas river is
the temple of Jawalamukhi, famous for it
eternally burning flame and is a popular
pilgrimage site in Himachal Pradesh. Besides
this there are a number of picturesque picnic
spots – the waterfalls of Bhagunath, whose
tank and spring are considered sacred: and
the Dharmkat, Triund and Kareri lakes.
Taragarh Palace is situated on a forested
estate surrounded by tea gardens of the
Kangra Valley, one of the most scenic and
unexplored areas of Himachal Pradesh. Located
at on altitude of 3,400 feet above sea level,
Taragarh Palace is at the foot of the
Dhauldhar Mountains with a splendid view of
the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Formerly
know as Alhilal, the Palace was built in the
early 1930s as a summer resort. It was
acquired by the royal family of Jammu and
Kashmir in 1951, and is now a heritage hotel.
